Bible Bonanza: A Guide to Choosing a Children’s Bible

I have had the privilege of teaching the nursery and preschool kids at Calvary for 6 years. During this time I have been asked many questions by parents, so I thought I would start a series on this blog to address some of them. By no means am I an expert, nor do I care to give advice, I would just like to share my personal experience with you. This month’s topic is on which children’s Bibles are the best. Reading the Bible to your child is one of the most important ways to help them grow spiritually. And the great thing is, you don’t have to have it all understood and memorized yourself before you can teach it to your children! You and your child can begin to learn and grow together as you read. There are some great resources out there, and it can be overwhelming to know

Jesus is Coming Again!

We are having a wonderful Spring here in the Early Childhood Sunday School classes! The kids have been studying a unit on the life of Christ. Our lessons took us through several of Jesus’ miracles and stories that show us how much He loves us, including the most loving act of all when He gave His life for us on the cross. This Sunday will be the last lesson in our series. The kids will hear the story of Jesus ascending to heaven after the resurrection from Acts 1:9-11. Again Jesus shows His love for us even in this final act on earth. He goes up to heaven in the clouds for all His friends to see. Then, two men clothed in white appear to the people and say that Jesus will return again someday in the same way that He left. Why did Jesus go to heaven? Wouldn’t it

The Very Best Love

This Sunday will be the last lesson in the ”Love Is…” series for the nursery and preschool Sunday School classes. Many of the preschoolers can now quote most of 1 Corinthians 13:4-7! Each week in January and February the kids have learned part of this passage from “the Love chapter” in a fun and interactive way with lots of songs, crafts, and Bible stories. In the conclusion this coming Sunday, we will be reviewing everything we’ve learned about love these past two months. Without a doubt, the greatest example of love in the Bible is Jesus Christ. No one loved people better or more than Him. In fact, the Bible says that “We love because He first loved us” 1 John 4:19. This week the kids will hear a few stories of how Jesus showed love to people during His time on earth. He healed sick people. He gave attention

The Man Who Took 7 Baths: A Lesson on Love

The Nursery and Preschool Ministries have been really enjoying our study of 1 Corinthians 13! If you haven’t heard a 3-year-old say “First Corinthians thirteen”, by the way, you’re missing out on one of the cutest things ever. The kids are practically experts now on understanding what the Bible says love is… and isn’t. Each week the kids learn about a different aspect of love from the first 5 verses of that chapter. So far we have covered “love is patient, love is kind, not proud or rude, doesn’t want what other people have, doesn’t brag, and love rejoices in the truth”. Whew! Just 3 Sunday’s left in this series. This Sunday will be Valentine’s Day, and we will continue right along with our love lessons. In our Sunday School classes the kids will learn that love doesn’t demand its own way. Our story is about a man in the

What Is Love, Anyway?

What is love? That is the question that we discussed last Sunday in the nursery and preschool Sunday school classes. The kids had some really great answers, mostly about nice things their moms do for them. We will be spending the next two months taking a close look at “the love chapter” in the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13 to see what God says love is… and isn’t. Each week the kids will hear a new Bible story that illustrates one of the verses from 1 Corinthians 13, and we will have corresponding activities and crafts as well. This past week the first love lesson was from verse 4, “Love is patient”. To illustrate this attribute the kids learned about a story from the life of Joseph from Genesis. Joseph found himself in prison for a crime he did not commit. One night, one of his fellow inmates, a butler who

He Hears and Answers Our Prayers

The Early Childhood Sunday School Classes are starting a new series this week about prayer! The kids will be spending the next 5 weeks learning what the Bible has to say about prayer. What exactly is prayer? Who should do it? When is a good time to pray? These are all questions that will be addressed in our series. This Sunday, we will look at one of my favorite characters from the Old Testament, Hannah. Hannah was just a regular lady, and like many regular ladies of the time, she really wanted to have children with her husband. But unfortunately, they were unable to have any children. Hannah was desperately sad. She couldn’t even eat. What did she do? Hannah went to the temple and prayed to God. She asked Him to give her a baby, and in return, she promised to give it right back to the Lord. She

Sunday School Review: Moses’ Teaching for Christians

What Do Moses’ Teachings Say for Christians? For the past eight weeks the kids have been learning all about the story of Moses and how God chose him and faithfully guided him in leading the Israelites. The second Moses unit has focused on all of the laws that God gave the Israelites through Moses. Sometimes all of those detailed laws can seem complicated and, honestly, irrelevant to Christians; we wanted to tackle that issue with the kids this past Sunday.   Last week we talked about why it is still important to learn about all of Moses’ teachings and the laws of the Old Testament. When we opened up the lesson by asking the kids why God sent Jesus to make up for our inability to keep all 613 of God’s laws perfectly, one student astutely answered, “Well, because there are just way too many of them to remember so

Why Did God Rest?

We are wrapping up our series on the story of creation in the Early childhood classes. It’s been a fun couple months learning about how our great God made the whole world and everything in it with the power of a few words! He did it all in just 7 days. Last Sunday we learned about the seventh day. This day was different than the previous six, because God didn’t actually create anything. This is the day that God rested. Wait, does that mean that God got tired? Was he all worn out from making all the awesome things during days 1-6? No! In this context, it just means that He stopped working. He had completed creation, so He intentionally stopped what He had been doing. When He looked at all He had created, He said “It is very good”. (Gen. 1:31) The Bible says that we should follow this

God Made Us Special!

The Early Childhood ministries are having a great time learning about the story of Creation from Genesis. Each Sunday the kids in our nursery and preschool classes hear about one of the 7 days in which God made the world. We read from the Bible, sing songs, play games, and do a craft that corresponds with each lesson. The AWANA Cubbies are also starting off this Fall with a unit on creation, so the preschool kids will have some extra reinforcement on Wednesday nights. This past Wednesday was our Calvary AWANA kickoff night! It was so much fun welcoming the kids back after Summer break. We had the In-N-Out truck serving up yummy burgers, and over 100 kids (most of whom brought their parents as well to join in the party)! If you weren’t able to make it but want your preschooler or elementary child to join us for AWANA
